Indagare Art Club:
The Rise of the Avant Garde: The Painters of Modern Life

Recognized as one of the most complex eras in history, the “long nineteenth century” (1879-1914) is often seen as the beginning of the modern world; the art created during this time reflects the optimism and belief in human rights of its early years and the chaos and despair of its final decade, as well as the tumultuous changes throughout. The club will explore how painters represented and responded to this period of rapid and profound social and political transformation across Europe. We will look at the changing aesthetic and cultural movements of the first half of the century and the impact of revolution, colonialism and industrialization on the work of artists ranging from Goya to J.M.W. Turner. Responding to Baudelaire’s call in the mid-century to “paint modern life,” we’ll discuss Realist and Impressionist artists from Gustave Courbet to Berthe Morisot. Moving forward with the continued rise of the avant garde, we’ll finish with Post-Impressionist and Symbolist painters such as Van Gogh, Whistler and Klimt, and the origins of Modernism in the work of Paul Cezanne.
