Special Edition: Christo’s Paris with WSJ
September 2021

Make a triumphant return to Paris—in style—with this exclusive package curated by WSJ and Indagare. Our limited-time offer includes three nights’ accommodations and amenities at one of our preferred hotels in the City of Light (you’ll have the choice between Le Bristol, Fouquet’s Barrière and Prince de Galles), as well as incredible behind-the-scenes entrance to the highly anticipated exposition of L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped—a historic, posthumous project by the late artist Christo at the architectural icon. This visit will be a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience: the project will only be on view for 16 days, and on October 3, it will be dismantled. When you book this package, you will be able to spend a morning in the company of one of the monument’s curators, exploring and learning about the installation—before it opens to the public; then, enjoy a scenic private breakfast reception atop the arch on the panoramic terrace.

Dates: Tuesday, September 28, 2021 – Friday, October 1, 2021

All packages include:

  • Enjoy special access on the morning of September 29 to the limited-time installation of L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The experience will feature a private guided tour in the morning—before the show opens to the public—hosted by one of the monument’s curators, followed by a special welcome breakfast on the monument’s panoramic terrace, which offers spectacular views of the city towards Place Charles de Gaulle, the Champs-Élysées and beyond. Drawn from plans that Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude began over 60 years ago, L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped will display the artist’s signature swaths of recyclable polypropylene fabric—this time, in an ephemeral silver-blue. Over 25,000 square meters will be used to cover the arch, along with 3,000 meters of French-red rope (In total, the installation will amount to a €14 million investment.). The unveiling of L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped represents a realization of one of Christo’s last visions: the artist, who passed away in May 2020, left instructions so that the work could be brought to life beyond his lifetime.

Le Bristol Paris Package

The epitome of elegance and discretion, Le Bristol is centrally located in a Haussmannian building on the chic Rue du Faubourg St.-Honoré in the heart of Paris’s 8th arrondissement. Le Bristol is stylist but not trendy, elegant but unpretentious, its service is impeccable but never overbearing (the only staff member who has a hint of Parisian indifference is Fa-Raon, the Burmese cat who roams the hotel’s corridors). The Bristol’s 190 rooms and suites surround a courtyard garden-at over 13,000 square feet it’s the largest hotel garden in all of Paris-so both street view and interior view rooms have their own unique charms. Like graceful pieds à terre, they all have distinct décor, with Louis XV and XVI furniture; floral fabrics by Rubelli, Pierre Frey and Manuel Canovas; and pink Portuguese marble in the bathrooms. The rooms in the Bristol’s new wing have wonderful high ceilings and elegant proportions, and some have views of the Eiffel Tower; the ones in the original wing have a special Parisian charm, including garden views and flower-filled terraces. Relax by the maritime-themed rooftop pool with views of the Paris skyline including Sacré-Cœur and the Eiffel Tower; enjoy impeccable tea service in Cafe Antonia, the most casual of the hotel’s three restaurants; indulge in couture window shop on Rue Faubourg; and finally, end the date with fabulous room service presented under gleaming silver cloches. Those who appreciate traditional decor, the discreet charm of the Faubourg Saint-Honoré area and impeccable service will fall in love with the Bristol.

Fouquet’s Barrière Package

With views over the Champs-Elysées, Avenue George V or a serene inner courtyard, Fouquet’s Barrière is quintessentially Parisian. Completely renovated in 2017 (with an extension introduced in 2019) by starchitect Jacques Garcia, it showcases a vivid fin-de-siècle meets mod-chic style. Buzzy Le Joy lounge, for instance, is decorated like a living room with green- and purple-velvet sofas, fabric-clad ceilings and large bookcases stocked with art and fashion titles. In the hands of a lesser talent, the variety of textures, patterns and materials would feel overwhelming, but Garcia manages to pull it all together into a masterful vision that’s opulent and playful at the same time. The 101 guest rooms and suites are comfortably sized and boast a myriad of high-tech toys, including LCD screens that are hidden in oversized mirror walls, movement-sensitive lights in the walk-in closets and, of course, WIFI throughout. All the design details are top-notch, and bathrooms are clad in marble and come with deep soaking tubs and floor heating. Those looking for more relaxing will love Spa Diane Barrière, with its moody 50-foot pool, beautifully lit and glimmering beneath a vaulted ceiling. There are also steam rooms, a sauna and a high-tech fitness center. Of course, no visit would be complete without having a coffee, drink or meal at Fouquet’s, the legendary brasserie founded in 1899 (a favorite of Marlene Dietrich, Jackie O. and Catherine Deneuve throughout the years). Its terrace, near the top of the Champs-Élysée, is one of the best people-watching spots in all of Paris. Click here to read Indagare’s full review.

Prince de Galles Hotel

In close proximity to the Arc de Triomphe on the Champs-Elysées, the Prince de Galles is located on the quieter Avenue George V. Originally built to host the Prince of Wales (Edward III) during his annual trips to Paris, the Prince de Galles (the name is a reference to Edward’s French title) is a triumph of Art Deco architecture and interior design. Many of the hotel’s beautiful original decorations were painstakingly restored to their former glory and Pierre-Yves Rochon’s interiors complement the 1920s style beautifully. Period design details like the geometric green, blue, and gold mosaics in the hotel’s oasis-like interior courtyard are echoed in tile motifs in the spacious bathrooms. In fact, some of the most original decorative aspects are found there. Playing off the hotel’s original mosaic wall and floor motifs, the showers are tiled with small green, blue, and gold patterns. Style-conscious travelers who like to be in the thick of things will adore the location on Avenue George V. During warm weather, don’t miss a meal at Le Patio, served en plein air in the hotel courtyard, is a must. Click here to read Indagare’s full review.
